Fire Department Overview
The Lyme Fire Department supports the town in fire safety and emergency response. Outdoor burning of ordinary combustibles like leaves, brush, or untreated lumber requires a permit unless the ground is completely covered with snow. Gas grills and charcoal fires in containers above ground do not require a permit. Before lighting a fire, notify the dispatch center with details of when and where you will be burning.

Bicycling Safety Information
Lyme FAST Squad encourages safe bicycling. Serious injuries can occur even during pleasant weather. Responders may be able to provide better and faster care if they know basic information about you. Bikers are encouraged to place a card inside their helmet with:
- Your name
- Any medical issues or medications
- Emergency contact
This simple step can make a significant difference in an emergency.
File of Life – Medical Form
The File of Life program provides a medical information form that you can complete and place where responders can easily find it during an emergency. This form helps FAST Squad and other emergency personnel know key medical information quickly, improving response and care.
House‑Numbering Program
To help emergency responders find your home quickly, clearly display reflective house numbers in visible locations. Proper placement helps responders, especially at night, locate your home when time is critical.
House Numbering Guidelines
Numbers should be:
- At least 3 inches high and 2½ inches wide
- Reflective for visibility
Suggested Locations
- On the house near the entrance door at eye level
- On mailboxes (number both sides, visible when the flag is down)
- On posts four feet above the ground to avoid snow cover
- If your driveway is shared or long, add numbering and directional signage along the way
Additional Tips
- Ensure the telephone company has your correct street address
- Make sure everyone in your household knows the correct address
Assistance
- Local hardware stores and volunteers may be able to help with purchasing or installing house numbers.
- The program is supported by the Lyme FAST Squad, Fire Department, and Police Department.
